From Architecture to Entrepreneurship: The Story of Iamthestudio Founder Brandon Gibbs

Brandon Gibbs didn’t take a traditional path to becoming a founder—but every step of his journey prepared him to build something lasting.

Brandon Gibbs Headshot - 2015 After Preflight

After earning his Master’s in Architecture and Urbanism from the Architectural Association in 2009, Brandon found full-time architecture jobs scarce in a design industry still reeling from the 2008 recession. Over the next six years, he taught, produced films, and worked as a freelance designer, building a wide range of creative and practical skills. Along the way, he came to a realization that would help shape his career: Design excellence alone isn’t enough. To survive in the profession, architects need to master business as well.

A Mindset Shift at the NEC

In 2014, Brandon joined the PreFlight program at the Nashville Entrepreneur Center (NEC). Although his initial venture didn’t scale, the experience transformed his mindset. He began thinking in systems, in value creation, and in building lean businesses. That pivot eventually led to the launch of Iamthestudio in 2021.

Building Iamthestudio

Iamthestudio began as an online course platform for architecture and design students. Today, it offers over 20 courses and serves more than 25,000 learners. The platform brings in steady monthly revenue and only takes a few hours per week to manage. Though modest in scale, it has helped spark brand partnerships with platforms like ThinkParametric and led to contracts with global architecture firms. Built to be self-sustaining, Iamthestudio reflects Brandon’s commitment to creating accessible, scalable learning tools while staying active in his professional practice.

Staying Grounded in Practice

But Brandon didn’t leave architecture behind. He now serves as Project Manager at Creative Design Professionals, one of Nashville’s top firms known for high-end hospitality, custom residential design, iconic commercial spaces, and innovative master plans. The firm has earned recognition for standout projects like the award-winning Tree Loft vacation destinations and the Highland Yards renovation. In his role, Brandon contributes to design leadership and coordination on complex, high-profile projects across sectors.

Between 2023 and 2025, he also played a key role with Culture Architecture & Design, helping finalize designs and provide construction administration support for the Tennessee Titans Stadium. Additionally, he serves as Chair of Professional Development for NOMA Nashville, helping mentor and uplift the next generation of Black and underrepresented design professionals.

Expanding the Platform with Architecture Beyond

In 2023, Brandon launched the podcast Architecture Beyond under the Iamthestudio umbrella—a platform that quickly carved out its own voice and value in the architecture space. With over 30 episodes and nearly 2,000 downloads, the show continues to grow through thoughtful collaborations and a loyal audience.

One recent highlight: an episode featuring NEC CEO Sam Davidson, where the two dive into what it means to build lasting impact as a creative entrepreneur. Check out Brandon’s episode recap for key takeaways, insights for design entrepreneurs, and a few bonus perks from Iamthestudio—or watch the full conversation below.

Architecture Beyond has also been recognized on Feedspot’s Top 100 Architecture Podcasts. It brings bold, relevant conversations to the forefront, covering everything from emerging tech and business strategy to wellness and creative leadership. The show continues to cement its role as both an educational tool and a platform for industry dialogue.

Designing a Career on His Own Terms

Brandon’s approach to business has been shaped by leaders like Daymond John and Marcus Lemonis at GrowCo, along with support from the NEC. His ventures prove that architects don’t need to choose between practice and entrepreneurship. They can thrive in both.
