From Humble Beginnings to Citywide Impact
In the latest episode of the Twendé Podcast, hosted by Nashville Entrepreneur Center’s Em Wilder, we dive into the incredible story of Carlos Partee, co-founder of Nashville Black Market (NBM). From a childhood surrounded by entrepreneurship in North Nashville to his current role as a cultural leader and community advocate, Carlos’s journey is a testament to resilience, creativity, and purpose.
Starting as a small pop-up shop in 2017 with just 15 business owners and two food trucks, Nashville Black Market has grown into a movement supporting black-owned businesses across the city. Whether hosting events at Nashville Farmers’ Market or the fairgrounds, NBM provides a platform for community, collaboration and celebration.
A Moment of Recognition
Carlos’s dedication to building a space for Black entrepreneurs was recently celebrated at the 2024 NEXT Awards, where NBM won the Hospitality and Retail Growth award. Reflecting on the moment, Carlos shared the emotional weight of being recognized among Nashville’s entrepreneurial giants: “It was surreal. To have our hard work honored in this way fuels our drive to keep building spaces that uplift and celebrate black businesses.”
The Power of Community and Vision
Carlos credits his success to staying connected to his roots. Inspired by the community-centered entrepreneurship of his great-aunt and great-uncle, who ran a local bar known as the Beer Garden in North Nashville, Carlos believes in the power of collective support. “My journey has always been about creating spaces where people can feel supported, celebrated and seen,” he says.
For NBM, the work is far from over. Carlos emphasizes the need for equity, ownership and continued collaboration to ensure that black entrepreneurs not only thrive but also have a stake in Nashville’s rapid growth. His vision extends beyond the city limits, with aspirations to replicate NBM’s blueprint in other cities.
Lessons for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
Carlos leaves listeners with invaluable advice: “Show up, stay consistent, and don’t give up. Whether it’s navigating challenges or breaking through brick walls, success lies in persistence and building meaningful relationships.”
